Over a use of nearly 3000 years, 90 individuals were buried at this place with many artefacts (pottery, decorated stone plaques, arrowheads, microliths ...). A good part of these objects are exhibited at the Centro de Pré-Historia do Instituto politechnico de Tomar. Protected by a fence, this dolmen in good condition is very interesting. Tomar Tomar is an intriguing and fascinating Portuguese town, which should be included in any visit to central Portugal. Today it may be a charming and picturesque town, but in the 13th century Tomar was one of the most influential towns on the Iberian Peninsula, being the religious center for the Templars. This secret and powerful religious order once ruled the Convento de Cristo, and this expansive religious complex is considered one of Portugals most beautiful national monuments. Golega The Lucitanos (Portuguese horses) festival Appeared in the 18th century, this fair was intended to promote the agricultural products of the region, with very fertile soils. In 1883, the Marquis de Pombal asked horse breeders to exhibit their stallions there. Over the years, the Lusitanian horse became the center of interest of the event, which today brings together more than 5000 stallions from all over the Iberian Peninsula (it was in 1972 that the fair officially became the "Feira nacionale do cavalo ", the national horse fair). In the heart of the village, an immense quarry brings together all the actors of the fair: famous figures of Portuguese horsemanship, illustrious strangers, "ribatejanos", all come to exhibit their sometimes very personal interpretation of the Portuguese Equestrian Art. Golegà, cradle of equestrian dressage and of the most prestigious lines of Lusitanos, becomes for a week during a city filled with smells and small noises, where the aromas of grilled chestnuts, improvised restaurants and Agua Pé, come to confront the subtle scents of these animals, heroes of a people, that of the horse in its noblest expression. Abrantes In fact, the origins of Abrantes are lost in time, after being conquered from the Moors by the first Portuguese king, D. Afonso Henriques who, in 1173, donated the city to the order of Santiago de la Espada. Due to its strategic location on the Tagus, Abrantes was of great military importance, especially during the time of the Reconquest and during the French invasions. Its location also made Abrantes an important strategic river port in traditional trade, to Lisbon, until the 1970s. The historic city center is made up of houses with an old flowered structure, once considered the city flourishing in the country, and it is worth visiting its built heritage, starting with the castle, followed by the churches of Santa Maria do Castelo (15th century), Saint Vincent, Saint John the Baptist, or the Mercy, as well as the Convent of Our Lady of Hope and of Saint Dominic. It is worth mentioning the Casa dos Almadas, formerly the Royal Palace of Abrantes, and also the Casa da Câmara. Abrantes also has an interesting museological collection, at the D. Lopo de Almeida Museum, located in the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo and the Martinchel Ecomuseum, a few meters from the Bode Castle Dam, as well as the Municipal Art Gallery , various temporary exhibitions.
