Think pastel-coloured Venetian buildings, a quaint fishing harbour and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, with its sparkling azure waters, dazzling beaches and deep emerald green mountains – making it a popular holiday spot for families, friends and couples alike. You can head into the picturesque port of Fiskardo, which is a short walk. There are charming 18th century buildings, which give it a feeling of timelessness, alongside popular fish restaurants and boutiques. The nearest beach is Foki Beach, a pebble bay surrounded by a tall forest. The waters are calm, sheltered and clear, making them perfect for swimming and snorkelling. There are also beautiful underground lakes and caves around the island for you to discover. From Fiskardo its an hour to the islands capital Argostoli. There you can stroll through the markets and pick up unique souvenirs, watch the fishermen bring in their catch at the harbour or pay a visit to the Corgialenios Historical and Cultural Museum, where theres an extensive library of rare books. For lunch or dinner, theres a central square, lined with plenty of local cafes, bars and restaurants. Kefalonia is a short distance from Ithaca, another Greek island in the Ionian Sea. To get there, theres a daily ferry that departs from the port of Sami in Kefalonia or there is a limited service from Fiscardo. You can also hop on a boat to see the nearby islands of Meganisi, Scorpio and Lefkas, and stop off at pristine beaches for swimming.
