It is situated on several small peninsulas in the southern part of the Burgas bay. The first name of the town given to it by the Greek colonists at its creation is Anthea. It was later changed to Apollonia in honor of the ancient Greek god Apollo. From late antiquity, Apolonia is known as Sozopolis, translated from Greek "the city of salvation." From the antiquity to the XVII-th century, Sozopol is a thriving shopping center. It is known as a fishing and wine center and an important marketplace for grain from Thrace. The town evolved as an important church center with many medieval monasteries. With its cultural and historical past, with its preserved XVIII-th century architecture, its beaches and the annual Apollonia Arts Festival, today Sozopol attracts many tourists. Medieval Sozopol was surrounded by a fortress wall and towers, built during the time of the Emperor Anastasius, about the year 511. They were used in the following centuries, and in many places they were rebuilt and built. Significant fragments of the fortification system, up to a height of 3-4 m, are preserved and can be seen today. Since 2003, the fortress walls have been reconstructed and preserved, revealing segments of the South Fortress Wall and the Watchtower. Along with the South Fortress Wall, another symbol of Sozopol is the Architectural and Archaeological Reserve “Ancient Sozopol”. It covers over 180 residential buildings with authentic Renaissance architecture from XVIII-XIX century. With its first floor, built of stone and second floor of wood, the buildings are a typical representative of the Black Sea Renaissance houses. Some of them also have elements similar to the Renaissance houses of the Strandja and Stara Planina type of house construction. Among the most famous buildings in the Reserve are "Marieta Stefanova House", "House of Creanoolo", "Todor Zagorov House", "Kourtidi House", "Dimitri Laskaridis House". From the archaeological point of view, the Thracian strongholds in the area of the Meden Rid (Copper Ridge) are of interest. The Meden Rid is a mountain ridge, encircling the arches and the low hills around Sozopol. In XIII-XII before Christ Thracians built a defensive line, consisting of strongholds on almost all the high peaks of the ridge. The most interesting are the fortresses of Mount Atia, Mount Bakarlaka, Lobodovo Kale and Malko Kale. On the heights of Meden Rid and the hills around the coastline there are many burial mounds with traces of the Thracian funerary rituals. In the past, their total number was about 1500. Today some of them have been archaeologically researched. Sozopol is also famous for the Necropolis of the Ancient Apolonia Pontica, the most famous of which are the Necropolis in the Sea Garden and the Necropolis in the localities of Harmanite, Budjaka and Kalfata. We recommend visiting the island of St. Ivan, where in 2010 an archaeological team, headed by Kazimir Popkonstantinov, excavated the medieval monastery "St. John the Baptist" and found a reliquary with the inscription "John the Baptist". The reliquary is made of alabaster and contains parts of a hand, parts of a face and a tooth. It is believed that the relics belong to St. John the Baptist and were brought to Sozopol in the IV century from Constantinople. The relics have been studied by scientists of the natural sciences who, after DNA analysis, proved that the relics are from one and the same man, a man who is from the Middle East, who lived in the beginning of the I-st century. Currently the relics are stored in the church "St. Cyril and Methodius" in Sozopol - one-nave one-apsistic building with a semi-cylindrical dome, built in the XIX-th century. The Church of the “Holy Virgin” dates back to the XV-th century and is a three-nave, one-apse church, a monument of culture of national significance, protected by UNESCO. “St. George the Victorious” Church dates back to the XIX-th century and it is the largest Sozopol church, a three-nave, one-apse church. The church stores particles for which it is believed to come from the Holy Cross and relics of the Apostle Andrew, who is believed to have been the first to preach Christianity in the region. The relics were donated by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I. The Church of “Saint Zosim” dates back to the XIX-th century. It was built as a single-nave one-apse stone church. Saint Zosim is the patron saint of Sozopol. The medieval churches in Sozopol were destroyed by the Ottoman Empire in the XV-XVIII century. On their foundations, the Christian population erected in the ?I? and ??-th century small chapels, about 20 in number, some of which still exist today: “St. Athanasius”, “St. Dimitar”, “St. Nicholas”, “St. Nicholas the Wonderworker”, “St. John the Baptist”,"St. Mary","St. Nedelya","St. Marina","St. Paraskeva","Jesus Christ","Saint Spas", "St. St. Constantine and Elena" , "St. Ivan Rilski", "St. St. Kirik and Julita" and others. We invite you to visit the Archaeological Museum in Sozopol, which stores a number of unique items, some of which are accessible to the public and scientific circles in the country and abroad. The Art Gallery of Sozopol is housed in a building - a monument of culture. The gallery presents paintings and sculptures by Bulgarian and foreign artists.
