It is well known in the world for its green granite with biotite which has had an important impact on the life of the village. The Montorfano granite has been used to make the 82 columns of the church San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome and also to make the Church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, one of the most interesting and best preserved Romanesque churches (XI-XII century) in the area. You will find also another big building made of granite: it was a Protestant church, built in the XIX century, due to a schism between the inhabitants of the village, that is now used as shelter for Boy Scouts groupsMany archeological artefacts of this and of other sites in the area are preserved at the Museum Antiquarium, in the village of Mergozzo, The Museum can be reached in ten minutes by car or by taking a walk along the so called ‘Sentiero Azzurro’ which starts from the first bend in the road coming from Montorfano and which runs along the small lake.If you love trekking, on the way to the top of the mountain, you can find the trenches and the old barracks built by Gen. Cadorna during World War One as stronghold of the Ossola valley. These barracks were later used by Partisans during the Resistence periodThe Mergozzo Lake, once a gulf of Lake Maggiore, is one of the most popular lakes in the area both with tourists as well as with locals, and it is also the cleanest one too thanks to the ban concerning motor boats. We’d like to suggest the sand beach ‘la Rustica’ in Portaiolo - which can be reached on foot from our house – where you can swim in one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. There are nice beaches also in the village of MergozzoWith a short walk uphill along the village narrow streets you can reach the ‘Belvedere’ with its beautiful view on the Lake Maggiore and the Borromeo islands. A little further you will find a small farm with animals as well as the Association ‘Somariamente’ which organizes activities with donkeys for familiesFor those who like climbing, but also for beginners, there is the ‘Sasso del cavallo’: a true natural training spot made of granite. On the South side of the mountain you can find in addition a number of cliffs with various degrees of difficultyThe whole area, which includes the lower Toce river and the Monte Orfano, is declared EU protected area due to the passage of migratory birds and the interesting variety of bird speciesWHAT TO SEE IN THE AREAWithin a half hour drive one can reach: Stresa, Orta and its lake, Verbania and the Villa Taranto, Intra and the lake ferry boat, the Val Grande Natural Park, Domodossola and many more destinations Property specifics: * Please note that most countries and/or areas have COVID-19 measures in place.
