The interior of the island is so green with wildflowers blanketing the fields. Enchanting whitewashed villages and alluring castles speckle the hillsides and the slopes of Mount Dikeos. Kos Town is the islands capital. It is very lively but is also very attractive with its superb archaeological buildings including Neratzia Castle. The Archaeological Museum is housed in a wonderful example of an Italian-era building, located in the central square. There are a wealth of sculptures from the Hellenistic to the late Roman eras with a statue of Hippocrates and a 3rd century AD mosaic as the star attractions. There are some wonderful restaurants in Antimachia though even more popular are the fish restaurants of Mastichari, 4km north of Antimachia on the north coast of the island. Antimachia holds several carnivals and festivals. The highlight is the Honey Festival that takes place in late August. Apart from dancing and singing to the local traditional songs, you will taste very good honey from the area along with honey-based sweets. The Wine Festival takes place in early September where you will taste many local wines, eat delicious local plates and enjoy Greek music into the early hours.
