In Pula there is a famous colosseum that was built in the 1st century AD. It is now known as the Pula Arena and hosts concerts, theatre and events. In the days of the Romans, it featured gladiator fights, which are now re-enacted In the summer months. There are lots of carnivals in Pula, so keep an eye out for these during your visit. Additionally, be sure to visit the Temple of Augustus, which was built to honour the emperor of the same name. Located in the main square, the temple is free to visit. This villa is also close to Banjole, a charming fishing village turned beloved holiday destination. Banjole has stunning hiking trails that wind through pine forests and around the Istrian peninsula. There are gorgeous coastal views from here and theres plenty of mountain biking trails, perfect for those who like to explore on two wheels. Around Banjole, there are several horse riding ranches that guests can visit. Istria is well known for its tasty cuisine and fresh ingredients, like wild asparagus and roasted chestnuts. Pula is also well placed for visiting Brijuni National Park, an archepilago of 14 islands. Take a day trip to discover the wild, natural beauty of the islands. It can be accessed by a short boat ride from Pula, which is beautifully scenic in itself. There are dinosaur footprints on the largest island, Viliki Brijuni and plenty of archaeological wonders to explore. Hikers will love the trails around the islands, with fascinating flora and fauna at every turn. Fazana is also nearby; a traditional, quaint fishing town with a lovely waterfront lined with colourful cafes. The village overlooks the Adriatic Sea and is authentically Croatian. Istria as a region has a strong Italian influence, being just two hours from Venice. Its easy to hop across the border and spend a day exploring Italy - a great holiday bonus. Istrias heart-shaped coastline is absolutely dazzling and is a little less touristy than other areas in Croatia.
