Croatias most prosperous city, it has bounced back big-time from the dark days of the early 1990s and now welcomes visitors in large numbers. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with historic gems from palaces to churches and its famously lengthy Old Town walls, it also offers all the amenities you would expect from a modern city. In July and August, the Dubrovnik Summer Festival brings live entertainment to the streets, while a Venetian-style carnival takes place in February. Walking tours of the city are a good way to dip into its historical side, as are museums like the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence, which will make you appreciate how well the city has been restored since. For an overview of a different sort, cable car trips take you up Mt Srd and reward you with superb views over the city and out across the ocean to nearby islands. The coast surrounding the city has much to discover – past the quiet bays of Zaton and Orasac, lies the Trsteno Arboretum. Its ‘Game of Thrones appearances have given it fame, but its a lovely place to visit in any case. Not far from here is Brsecine, formerly home of great Croatian poetess, Cvijeta Zuzoric. Cavtat, further south, has its own cultural connection – the House of Vlaho Bukovac was the home of one of the countrys greatest painters, and you can view his impressive work there. Dubrovnik hosts plenty of cultural events with classical concerts often held in the palaces of the city. Other musical styles can be found in venues on and around Stradun. Youll find everything from cool jazz to pumping DJ sets around its bars and, while the city isnt famed for particularly hardcore nightlife, there are a few clubs which keep things going late into the night. The dining scene runs the gamut from ordinary to extraordinary – choose well with the help of a local guide, and you can expect some great seafood dishes and often a stunning setting.
