The local hilltop village, Montaione, around a 15-minute drive away, is a charming place to spend time in authentic surroundings and there is a good choice of traditional restaurants and bars. Castelfiorentino (7.5km) is another useful Tuscan town nearby which is home to a number of useful amenities and supermarkets. A little further and you will find beautiful Certaldo (18km), a wonderful town famous for growing delicious sweet purple onions (Cipolle di Certaldo) and for being author Giovanni Boccaccios hometown. Spend the morning exploring the museums then tuck into a bowl of fresh onion pesto pasta. This is a truly authentic medieval town – there is not a souvenir shop in site. Empoli (21km) is also close by, a place full of history and culture with plenty of museums and galleries to explore and beautiful piazzas where you can enjoy a quiet aperitivo or gelato. Perhaps combine with a visit to San Miniato (19km), an eye-catching little town sitting between Pisa and Florence famous for its white truffles. Meander down pretty cobblestone streets taking in old churches and cathedrals and treat your tastebuds with local delicacies such as blood sausage, wild mushrooms and goats cheese. Other Tuscan villages and towns to discover include picture-perfect San Gimignano (30km) with its idyllic hilltop setting and medieval towers as well as the Etruscan town of Volterra (40km). Lovers of art and history will surely wish to spend some time in Florence (52km) or head south to discover the beauty of Siena (64km), both around an hour away by car (or pick up a train from nearby Castelfiorentino). Golf enthusiasts can enjoy a round of golf just half an hour away at Castelfalfi Golf Club (23km), the regions biggest course whilst there are also horse-riding stables within a short drive, another great way to explore the magnificent Tuscan scenery. It goes without saying that walking, hiking and cycling opportunities across this part of Tuscany are endless and there are plenty of places for wine tasting in local vineyards or even taking part in the autumns wine harvest.
