The Setting / Immediate Area The heart of Uzumlu is the Village Square which gives you a unique insight into true rural Turkey. Contained within and around, you will find a variety of shops, restaurants and bars each with its own special ambiance. The gems we have found would have to include:- The Bakery – the smell of wood fired ovens mixed with fresh bread, hails from another era. The Street Market – every Friday in Uzumlu stalls bursting with fresh local produce and every pot/pan/tool you can imagine. Gents Barbers – Make sure you don’t leave Turkey without experiencing haircut and wet shave, head, neck and arm massage, finished off with lemon oil – you’ll float out of the shop! Local Weavers – You can walk in and watch production by traditional methods. A range of clothes and linens can be purchased at extremely reasonable prices – truly fascinating. The Café in the Square – Have breakfast in the shade and perhaps give a thought to what to do today – or not as the case may be. A great selection of restaurants and bars are dotted in and around the village serving excellent cuisine at very reasonable costs. All have their own charm for you to discover. Uzumlu is a wonderful place to meyander and take in the sights and sounds. The variety of produce grown – grapes, olives, pomegranates, peach, figs, walnuts – the list is endless. The livestock present alongside wild tortoise, Jay’s and a host of other bird life add to the experience. Various walks up into the surrounding hills and mountains will reward you with magnificent views down the valley, as well as other points of interest along the way. If you wish to explore further afield and take in more of what the area has the ‘Dolmus’ (local bus) provides a cheap and regular service into Fethiye. It is from here you can strike out in any direction to the numerous points of interest mentioned plus more. The satisfaction comes from knowing that at the end of the day, you can return to Villa Carlette in Uzumlu, swim, take a shower, relax with a drink on the spacious upstairs balcony and watch the sun set over the mountains. How and why did we choose Uzumlu you might ask! Fate and excellent support from people we have come to cherish as friends in England and Turkey is how. To experience just a part of what is on offer in Uzumlu served with friendliness and hospitality of the Turkish people, finished off with a nightcap under a star filled sky was the why and the icing on the cake. Attractions nearby The nearest town is Fethiye which has all the attractions of the Mediterranean – the blue of the Med is legendary, but until it is actually seen first hand, the words are meaningless. The Harbour and Marina is boarded by palm tree promenades with ample bars and restaurants to choose from to dine or to sit with a glass of your favourite drink and take in the magnificent views and watch the world go by. ‘The Paspatur’ which is the old part of Fethiye is lined with bars and restaurants offering excellent local and international cuisine. Not to mention the fresh fish market which is surrounded with restaurants and are at hand to cook the fish of your choice from the fish stalls. There is a maze of streets filled with shops offering the most wonderful treasure – ‘A shopper’s paradise’. The town is so alive in the evening it will be hard to take your self away from it. You will also find a large market on the edge of the town every Tuesday, which is well recommended as you will find lots of interesting things to buy (this is also a time to try your bartering, where the locals are happy to do so) After you have been round the market stalls, try one of their fresh fruit drinks and delicious homemade pancakes in the little undercover cafes, the people are so friendly – it’s a treat. There are several small quite secluded beautiful beaches at the far end of Fethiye, where the locals tend to spend their weekends. Also not to be missed is the 12 Island Cruise from the promenade, where you will find a variety of boats to choose from. A little further along the coast is Oludeniz – a designated National Park. Its beaches sweep along for 3km into the world famous ‘Blue Lagoon’ with crystal clear waters. This area is perfect for the more energetic who like to indulge in water sports such as sailing, scuba diving, water rafting, or you can just sit in one the cafes on the seafront and watch the paragliders land on the beach from the mountains around you. It is just paradise. Near to Oludeniz is a much livelier place called Hisaronu. It is filled with shops galore, restaurants, late night bars and discos – particularly good for the young at heart. Calis beach is about 10 mins drive from Villa Carlette and is famous for its stunning sunsets. The shingle beach sweeps round to a finer shingle beach where you can indulge in more water sports – this area is a new development and is very pretty. Jeep Safaris depart from Calis at 9a.m leaving the main roads behind and heading into the countryside. The Safari takes in the Trout Farm at Yakapak which is a protected National Park area. Then onto the 2nd largest Canyon in Europe at Saklikent which is truly breathtaking. Finally calling at Pattara Beach which at 22km long is one of Turkeys longest and beautiful beaches, giving you time to relax before returning back to Calis at around 7.p.m. You can take a stroll along the promenade, dine in one of the many restaurants, take in the sunset and enjoy the lashing sound of the sea. The NIL Bar is particularly good – say Hello to Angel (she’s the owner) the food is excellent. There are numerous shops, bars and restaurants in the centre and down the side streets you will find little treasures. The night life is excellent here, some of the bars have little shows and you can dance the night away – it really is well worth the visit especially in the evening. A water taxi service under the little bridge to the rear of the promenade takes you to Fethiye. Yet again there is an excellent market held on the outskirts of the town every week. Dalyan is a little further to travel, but well worth the trip. Here it is possible to take a boat ride to view the natural local attractions, either sharing a boat or private hire with own captain – the latter giving more freedom. The vast area of reed beds – home to many turtles lead the way to a beautiful lagoon to the rear of Turtle Beach where fresh caught crab is served from a boat and a chance to swim perhaps. A relaxing journey back through the reed beds up the Dalyan River to the vast lakes, taking in the breathtaking scenery overlooked by ancient Lycian Tombs carved into the mountain sides. Upon reaching the lake, another chance to swim in the warm fresh water or take further refreshment. The trip continues onto the mud bath area, the commercial site is good but the small site we visited with our Captain was better as it was a natural mud bath. After the mud bath experience the return to the quay at Dalyan enabled us to choose yet again from one of the many excellent restaurants. Truly a memorable day out in an unspoilt area. There are so many worthwhile sites to visit within a days travel – too many to cover here, but amongst the best must be:- Saklikent Gorge, Pumakale and Pattara Beach Turkey really is a land of many treasures waiting for you to discover.
