Maison Kernal was built in 1856 with the cottages over the road being even older dating back to the 1700s, now beautifully restored. Kernal hamlet consists of the previous cottages and a farm down the little lane. Situated in central Brittany, the location is ideal for country walks in the nearby Montagnes Noires, as well as being within easy reach of the South and North coasts for coastal walks and beach life. This lovely rural cottage has all the charm of French country living with plenty of space, tranquility and full of character. All your troubles will be easily left behind once you arrive, as the setting is on a quiet lane with plenty of surrounding farmland. In the evenings the only sound to be heard might be an owl hooting and the odd distant church bell. There is a very private sunken terrace out the back overlooking a large lawned garden perfect for enjoying evening drinks, BBQs and games. Perched high in an old oak tree is the Hobbit tree house with veranda, not just for children! In cooler weather, there is nothing better than relaxing around the huge feature fireplace with log burner. Brittany is renowned for its seafood and stunning coastlines, perfect for walking or enjoying peaceful sunbathing on the beaches. There are beautiful stretches of sandy beaches and calm waters for family fun, as well as little coves for rock pooling and exploring. If you love sailing and boating, then this is the place to visit with many a picturesque little French port where you will see colourful boats bobbing about on tether. Lorient on the south coast is just 45 minutes away, with beaches in either direction. Le Pouldu is a favourite large stretch of sandy beach (1hr) or a favourite port to visit is Doelan (1hr). Brittany has a romantic past and affinity with the Celtic culture. Celtic music and dance plays a strong part in their daily lives. The culture and countryside is very similar to Cornwall, but without the crowds. Brittany has drawn many a great artist over the centuries, due to the ever changeable weather, moods and landscape. The beautiful light inspires artistic expression. There are fascinating historic towns like Quimperle (45 mins), Quimper (1hr) and Pontivy (45mins), the lovely port Concarneau (1hr) with walled town and Pont Aven (1hr) for art lovers filled with galleries and talented artists. Langonnet is a typical Breton village just 10 minutes from the cottage, where you have a local shop for necessities, bakery, butcher and restaurant. It is an easy cycle ride from the cottage on a lovely day. The larger towns of Le Faouet, Gourin and Rostrenen offer a wider choice of shopping, markets, restaurants, bars and cafes to enjoy the French lifestyle. The area is renowned for their local Fest Noz (local celebrations), which are plentiful and usually held on weekends. Posters will advertise these in the local bars and shops. The area is renowned for walking with ancient footpaths linking historic chapels. The Nantes/Brest Canal is close by for walking or cycling. There is a Pony Club just 5 minutes around the corner from the cottage with the favourite pony called Tartine! If you are looking for absolute peace and calm visit the Abbaye de Langonnet or Plouray Buddhist Centre close by, which was recently visited by the Dalai Llama. For a quick swim there are a number of lakes nearby ie.Langonnet and for larger lakes in the area visit Lake Priziac or the very beautiful Lac de Guerledan.
